About Us
British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) offers an exceptional opportunity to work at a world-class organization while living in a west coast setting. With $313.7 billion of gross assets under management, as of March 31, 2026, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is the provider of investment management services for British Columbia’s public sector and one of the largest asset managers in Canada. BCI seeks investment opportunities around the world and across a range of asset classes that convert savings into productive capital. Our investment returns play a significant role in helping our institutional clients build a financially secure future for their beneficiaries.
This isn't a traditional IT role, and it isn't a traditional Software Engineer, Data Engineer, or Business Intelligence role either. You'll learn the business, build relationships, and partner with Private Equity SMEs to solve problems instead of taking orders. You'll build applications, automated workflows, and AI agents that change how the PE team works day to day, along with the data pipelines, models, and dashboards that sit underneath them.
The role can be based in either our Vancouver or Victoria, BC offices, we will not consider candidates only looking to work remotely.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
- Modern tools, pushing boundaries: We run Databricks (Unity Catalog, Apps, Lakebase, Genie, Vector Search), Azure, Power BI, and enterprise Claude across the full product suite (Claude Code, Artifacts, Cowork, Skills), already connected to our data platform through an MCP server we built and operate. We are actively replacing manual processes with agentic workflows and internal apps built with AI-assisted development
- High-impact work: 75% of the organization uses our analytics; we work with smart, ambitious business users on high-ROI use cases where the results show up in real investment decisions
- Embedded, not ticketed: The team sits with the PE department. You'll be in the room when problems are defined, not handed a spec afterwards
- Great culture: Fast-paced with world-class expectations, but supportive and genuinely fun
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Technology Solutions (Private Equity), the Senior Software Engineer designs and delivers end-to-end, full stack solutions for the business, from production applications and AI agents through to the data pipelines and analytical models that power them, working with minimal technical direction.
You'll partner closely with Private Equity (PE) teams across PE Finance, PE Operations, Deal teams, and PE directors and executives, where data accuracy has real business and regulatory consequences. You'll own your work from the first conversation with a stakeholder to the production release and beyond.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 6 years of related experience, including hands-on delivery of production applications
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: experience designing and building full stack applications in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript (e.g. FastAPI, Flask, Node.js, Next.js, React), including back-end architecture, REST API design, and front ends with good UI/UX
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python
- Experience building agentic workflows and LLM-powered applications, including RAG, using AI to process unstructured data (documents, emails, PDFs), and working with MCP servers and tool-calling architectures
- Hands-on experience with Databricks and the Azure stack
- Daily fluency with AI-assisted development tools, ideally the Claude ecosystem (Claude Code, Artifacts, Cowork, Skills) or equivalents
- Experience with both transactional databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MariaDB) and analytical warehouses (e.g. Databricks SQL), and knowing when to use which
- Solid data engineering foundation: ETL/ELT pipeline development, data modelling, and data architecture
- Comfortable in modern engineering practice: Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure-as-code deployment (e.g. Databricks Asset Bundles, Terraform, Azure DevOps)
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g. SSO, OAuth 2.0, OIDC, role-based access control) in enterprise applications
- Demonstrated experience leading complex projects end-to-end at high pace and quality, with minimal direction required
- Strong project planning and communication skills: you scope work, set expectations, surface risks early, and give stakeholders regular updates without being asked
- Evidence of being a top performer, self-starter, curious and capable of learning new skills, behaviours, and tools quickly
- Experience mentoring other engineers, including code and design review, and raising team standards
NICE TO HAVES
- Knowledge of Private Markets (fund structures, capital calls and distributions, valuations, portfolio monitoring)
- Experience working in investment management or other regulated, data-intensive domains
- Experience with Databricks Apps, Lakebase, Genie, or Vector Search
- Familiarity with graph databases and knowledge graphs (e.g. Neo4j) and where they fit alongside relational and analytical stores
WHAT YOU WILL DO
You'll lead, build, and maintain end-to-end solutions across the full delivery lifecycle including:
- Partnering with PE stakeholders to define problems, gather requirements, and shape solutions together
- Designing and delivering end-to-end applications, including tech stack selection, architecture, back-end and front-end development, REST APIs, integration with existing systems, and DevOps, hosted on Databricks Apps and Azure
- Building agentic workflows and AI agents: document intelligence over investment materials, automated processing and routing of files from fund administration feeds, natural-language access to PE data through MCP, and Claude Skills that package team knowledge
- Owning delivery from scoping through testing, deployment, production release, and ongoing support, including prioritization, stakeholder management, and communicating progress and risks on a regular cadence
- Developing data pipelines and analytical solutions with clear lineage, reconciliation, and validation suitable for PE fund and portfolio reporting, valuations, and audit review
- Proactively identifying risks, streamlining operations, developing application roadmaps, and maintaining accurate technical documentation
- Sharing expertise across teams and mentoring team members and co-ops through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing, and contributing to team standards
- Staying current on the AI and Databricks ecosystem and bringing new capabilities to the team where they create real value
WHERE YOU WILL WORK
This role can be based in either our Victoria or Vancouver office. Relocation support within Canada is available if needed. We are an in-person, collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely one day per week.
SALARY RANGE
The annualized salary range for this role is CAD $106,000 to $128,000.
Our recruitment process requires that the successful candidate agrees to undergo a criminal record search, education and designation verification; to provide a declaration of no previous or current criminal status; and to comply with our corporate Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct.
